More and more physicians are continuing to practice later in life, raising concern for diminishing physical and mental skills with age.  This is complicated by the fact that some physicians are more skilled than others at baseline, and some can have loss of skills when young due to other reasons, such as illness, substance abuse, etc.

What is the most ethical approach to assure that physicians maintain adequate clinical skills in the older physician population?
